El Yunque: The Only Tropical Rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System
El Yunque National Forest is 45 minutes east of San Juan and one of the most accessible natural wonders in the Caribbean. It is the only tropical rainforest managed by the U.S. Forest Service -- 28,000 acres of cloud forest, waterfalls, hiking trails, and wildlife that gets over 100 billion gallons of rainfall per year. A day trip from San Juan is entirely practical and genuinely spectacular.
Getting There
Rent a car at SJU and take PR-3 east -- the most direct route. The drive from the airport to the El Yunque visitor center is about 45 minutes under normal traffic. PR-191 winds up into the forest from the town of Rio Grande. Google Maps navigates well on this route. Guided tours from San Juan are also available if you prefer not to drive.
Best Trails
- La Mina Trail: The most popular trail in El Yunque -- 1.2 miles down to La Mina waterfall with a swimming hole at the bottom. Moderate difficulty. Bring water shoes.
- El Yunque Trail: 2.5 miles to the El Yunque Peak observation tower at 3,496 feet. Panoramic views of the forest and the Atlantic on clear days. More challenging with some steep sections.
- Big Tree Trail: 1.2 miles through old-growth forest, connecting to La Mina. Easier and shadier than the peak trails.
- Juan Diego Falls: A shorter waterfall hike accessible early on PR-191 before the main visitor area.
What to Bring
- Water shoes or trail shoes that can get wet -- waterfalls and stream crossings are part of the experience
- Rain jacket or poncho -- it is a rainforest and showers arrive with no warning
- Reef-safe insect repellent -- mosquitoes are present especially near standing water
- Water and snacks -- food options in the forest are limited
- Cash for parking and any entry fees
Practical Tips
Arrive early -- the most popular trailheads fill by mid-morning on weekends and the parking situation becomes complicated. Weekday visits are significantly less crowded. The forest is almost always cooler than San Juan -- bring a layer if you are sensitive to temperature changes. Cell service in the forest is spotty -- download offline maps before leaving San Juan.
Combining with Luquillo Beach
El Yunque and Luquillo Beach are on the same route east of San Juan. Many visitors do both in a single day -- El Yunque in the morning when it is cooler and less crowded, then Luquillo beach for the afternoon. The beach has excellent food kiosks serving traditional Puerto Rican dishes right on the sand.
