SJU Traveler Tips
  • No passport needed for U.S. citizens -- Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory. A valid driver's license or government ID is sufficient for all domestic flights.
  • Arrive 2 hours early for domestic and 3 hours for international. Morning peaks (5-8 AM) see the longest security lines.
  • Uber and Lyft both work at SJU -- open your app from baggage claim. Fixed-rate taxi zones also available for key San Juan destinations.
  • Cape Air and Silver Airways inter-island flights use a separate regional terminal. If you're connecting to STX, STT, or EIS, confirm your departure terminal -- it is not the same as where mainline carriers operate.
  • Allow 2-3 hours for connections at SJU when arriving internationally (from BVI, etc.) -- CBP processing for international arrivals takes time.
  • The rental car center is reached by shuttle from outside baggage claim -- not a walking connection. Factor in 15-20 minutes from plane to car.
  • Isla Verde, where the airport sits, has several beachfront hotels within a 5-10 minute drive -- a good option for late arrivals or early departures.
  • Old San Juan is about 20-25 minutes by taxi or Uber -- worth the trip for anyone with time before or after a flight.
