🛣 Where to Drive from San Juan
Puerto Rico is 100 miles wide and 35 miles tall -- surprisingly large for a Caribbean island. Most major destinations are 1-2 hours from SJU on good highways.
El Yunque National Forest

The only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest system. Waterfalls, hiking trails, and dramatic cloud forest scenery. A must-do day trip from San Juan -- easy highway drive on PR-3 east.
Rincon
~2.5 hrs from SJU
Puerto Rico's surf capital on the west coast. World-class waves, laid-back beach bars, spectacular sunsets, and whale watching in winter. Worth the drive for a night or two.
Ponce
~1.5 hrs from SJU
Puerto Rico's second city on the south coast. Beautiful colonial architecture, the Museo de Arte de Ponce, and a completely different climate -- drier and sunnier than San Juan year-round.

The most popular public beach in Puerto Rico -- a long palm-lined crescent just east of El Yunque. Kiosks selling local food, calm protected water, and easy parking make it perfect for families.
Ceiba Ferry Terminal

Drive to Ceiba, park the car, and take the ferry to Culebra or Vieques. Both islands are car-free for visitors -- leave the rental at Ceiba and explore by golf cart or taxi on the islands.
Tolls: PR-22 (San Juan to the west) and PR-52 (San Juan to Ponce) are toll roads with electronic-only collection. Ask your rental agency about their AutoExpreso transponder -- without one you'll receive a bill by mail with added fees. Worth the small daily charge for highway driving.

Check your credit card for rental coverage.
