SJU is the Gateway to the Caribbean
Luis Munoz Marin International Airport is the most important connection point in the Caribbean. Whether you are heading to St. Croix, St. Thomas, Tortola, or dozens of other island destinations, chances are you connect through SJU. Getting your connection right is the difference between a smooth trip and a stressful one.
The Critical Terminal Issue
This is the most important thing to know: Cape Air and Silver Airways inter-island flights depart from a separate regional terminal, not from the mainline terminals where American, JetBlue, Delta, and United operate. When you arrive on a mainline flight and need to connect to an inter-island carrier, you need to exit the secure area, take a shuttle or walk to the regional terminal, and re-clear security. This takes time.
How Much Connection Time You Need
- Domestic arrival + inter-island connection: Minimum 2 hours, 2.5 hours recommended. You need to clear the mainline terminal, find the regional terminal, check in with Cape Air or Silver (closes 30 minutes before departure), and clear security again.
- International arrival + inter-island connection: Minimum 2.5 hours, 3 hours recommended. International arrivals at SJU clear U.S. CBP, which adds 30-45 minutes to the process before you can even start getting to the regional terminal.
- Mainline to mainline connection: 90 minutes is generally sufficient if terminals are connected. Confirm your arriving and departing terminals match.
Through-Ticketing: The Simpler Option
American Airlines has an interline agreement with Cape Air. If you book a through-ticket on American's website from your home city to STX, STT, or other Cape Air destinations, American handles the connection logistics. Your bag is checked through to the final destination. If your mainline flight is delayed and you miss the Cape Air connection, American is responsible for rebooking you. This is significantly less stressful than booking the two legs separately.
The SJU CBP Process for Returning from BVI/Caribbean
If you are arriving at SJU from the British Virgin Islands or another non-U.S. Caribbean destination, you clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection at SJU as an international arrival. The CBP hall at SJU can back up significantly -- 30 to 60 minutes during busy periods. Global Entry holders use the APC kiosks and clear significantly faster. If you have an onward connection from SJU, factor in CBP time aggressively.
Overnight in San Juan
Many travelers heading to smaller Caribbean islands choose to overnight in San Juan rather than risk a tight same-day connection. Isla Verde hotels are 5-10 minutes from SJU. Old San Juan is 25 minutes away and worth the experience. An overnight layover turns a potentially stressful connection into a genuine San Juan visit.
